Salsa refers to a fusion of informal dance styles having roots in the Caribbean (especially Cuba and Puerto Rico), Latin and North America. Salsa is danced to Salsa music. There is a strong African influence in the music and the dance. There are some basic tips and tricks we will share with you when starting off to learn this hot fiery latin dance.
When salsa dancing, you must have the appropriate footwear. It's best for men to wear leather soles. I would avoid wearing any open shoes because that could be painful if your partners heel hits your toes. I would recommend women wear solid dance shoes for support. If they are new shoes, make sure you break them in good to avoid your feet from getting blistered. As for clothing, comfortable and light clothes are best to allow free movement. You want to make sure the clothes you wear will allow you to perform those turn patterns and shines without restricting your ability to glide across the dance floor.
Start off by taking some lessons. Most salsa clubs offer free 1 hour lessons prior to the club opening up. If you want to fine tune other aspects of your salsa dancing try going to a local dance studio. Guys especially since your job is to make the women look good as a lead. Be sure to practice your shines. Shines are fancy footwork and body actions, danced in separation. This is the part of salsa that makes it so hot because the guy and the girl get to "show off" their individual dance moves.
Within the confines of following the guy, ladies need to be quick and creative. You must be able to closely watch his movements, feel for his cues and where he wants you to follow. You do not want to be bobbing or bouncing around. Try to keep a straight back posture, minimal tension in your arms and let the rhythm move your hips.
And for both sexes, avoid ponytails - when you're that close and you're spinning, you don't want a lethal whack from a whirling hunk of hair!
The important thing to do is relax and have fun. Watch other, more experienced dancers as you're trying to make your first moves. After a few turns on the dance floor, it will become second nature and you'll be a salsa sensation.
Final tip - bring a little hand towel with you for your night out. Because if you're doing salsa right, you're going end up having to wipe off a lot of sweat!
