In the year 2000, television watching certainly seemed to be on the verge of turning a new corner. TVs were getting bigger and cheaper and, crucially, the mainstream choice of channels available really started to grow. Some may have predicted that these indicators could have suggested that action packed and visually stunning television hits were soon to follow, but, of course, they would've been wrong.

Looking back at the decade in television, two words stick out like sore thumbs in any possible review of the ‘noughties' TV highlights. The first is simple; a whole genre of programming that can be summed up with the word ‘reality'. Little did we know that reality TV would hit quite as hard as it did; starting with popular but fairly innocuous fly on the wall documentaries, like Airline, Driving School and dozens of police force-based derivatives, and ending with the Orwellian triumph Big Brother and the dream-shattering X-Factor.

However, the other global phenomenon that was on everybody's tongue at some point in the last decade wasn't anything quite so new; in fact it was a fairly basic sitcom format, called Friends.

Undoubtedly the number one TV show of the decade, Friends burst onto the world's screen and became not just an instant classic, but reached the status of cultural icon within its first year; influencing a huge number of spin-offs, copycat formats, coffee houses and inspired twenty-somethings. Dubbed simply "The Last One", the final show in the series'10 year history was the most watched piece of television this decade, with an estimated 52.5 million people tuning in to say goodbye as the camera panned across the empty apartment.

In fact, saying goodbye seemed to be a recurring theme in the most viewed television of the decade, as the series finale of Frasier in 2000, Spin City in 2000 and Everybody Loves Raymond in 2005 and all made it into the top 10 most watched list. Similarly, an estimated 39 million fans tuned in to ER in 2000 to find out who would survive between Lucy Knight and John Carter after they were attacked in the previous episode.

In the close-up world of reality TV, nothing was off limits. From teenage sex scandals to eating jungle critters, it was all televised and, as if that wasn't enough, celebrities just seemed to love inviting camera crews into their homes too. However, it was the promise of fulfilling dreams that really caught the public's imagination as the incredibly similar X- Factor, American Idol and Pop Idol all scored very highly in the most-watched stakes, making the Simon Cowells of this world incredibly rich and, ironically, making very few talented singers household names.

Who knows what the next 10 years will hold for television, but to make sure you don't miss any of the best bits, look into digital television, or one of the many Sky TV offers, and catch the shows you can't afford to miss.
