Phil had just bought a small A frame house in the Mount Washington Valley where he could come up to do some mountain biking in the summer and some downhill skiing in the winter. He was working full-time for an environmental company that specialized in the remediation of land where underground gas storage tanks had eroded to the point that the fuel had seeped into the earth and the surrounding aquifers. The work was sometimes tedious, but he got to be outside most of the time and that was enough of a benefit.
The job paid quite well and for that reason he was able to apply for a mortgage for his small little house. It was very small and it had a first floor with kitchen, dining room, and living room are all open as one, and then a separate bed and bathroom. Upstairs was a loft with another bed so he could bring friends up if he wanted. He heated the house mostly with wood, but he had to use oil when he was away to keep the temperature up just enough so that the pipes didn't freeze.
In the house he was able to get some of the local news channels, most of them from the bordering state of Maine. The weather forecasts he saw were not as applicable to the area where he was living. The weather was a very important factor in the activities that he did when he was up there, so he knew he had to do something. When it came to skiing, he loved the fresh powder days, which were somewhat of a rarity for the east coast mountains, but every year there were a few days with fresh snow each run.
The valley had more than 7 mountains within an hour's driving distance, and all the mountains were at different elevations. As a result of this, one mountain could get 6 inches of fresh snow, while another one could get a foot and a half. The best way to know about the snow conditions was through one of the local channels that could only be found on satellite or cable. Phil's house was a little off of the beaten path and didn't have cable service so he opted for satellite and was very pleased with his decision.
He got a great deal that came with two HD receivers, one of which he put in the living area and the other he put in his bedroom. He now had access to the valley's RSN network via the satellite subscription. This network gave the most up-to-date snow reports from all of the mountains in the surrounding area and this was very helpful in choosing which mountain to go to for the day. Sometimes, due to high winds the ski-lifts had to shut down, this was an advance warning before driving all the way to resort and finding it closed for the day.
The RSN network on his satellite television also gave him the local events that were going on, so when he was alone or with some friends, they would be able to go out to one of the local bars and catch a band. The weather channel was another great additional resource that let him get an idea of the weather back home, so he could plan his return trip in advance to make it as hassle free as possible.
