To boldly go where no man has gone before has sadly been replaced by the new cliché of to go where no man can afford to know with the cancellation of the effort to return to the moon in the new budget. In this cynical time, we need another show like Star Trek to spark our collective imagination.

The times they are a tough. Perhaps you've noticed. The economy has been so bad that we've come up with a new title known as the “Great Recession” which is apparently an indication things are really bad, but not as absolutely bad as the Great Depression. Millions of people are out of work and things are even worse on the government side.

The problem? Like many of us did with our credit cards, the government seems to be waking up to the fact that it owes a lot of money. As of the time of this article, the national credit card is up to 12.3 trillion dollars and should be in the 14 trillion range by the end of the year. Even worse, our creditors have started making comments about whether they are going to extend our credit line any further.

Given all of this, it is time to cut back on our spending. The space program is one of the agencies on the list. The plan to return to the moon has been scrubbed. For those of us that were hoping to see man on Mars before the end of our lives, this is not good news. The nation needs a picker upper, but it is apparent we won't be seeing it in the space arena.

Star Trek was a great show because it inspired us to think about space travel. We've even seen some of the things on the show become real technology such as the ion engine. While much of the show was admittedly limited by the special effects of the time, there is no doubt that it sparked a collective imagination. That is exactly what we need today. Not a move or show about a galaxy far, far away, but one about a species called humans who explored their universe.

Maybe then we would get back into space.
